General Podiatry

Healthy feet, happy life.

The A To Z Of Podiatry

Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the feet and lower limbs. While it’s primarily associated with the feet, podiatry also extends to the lower legs, and the benefits of podiatry may be felt all the way from your toes to your head. Head, shoulders, knees and toes indeed!

You may decide to see a podiatrist if you experience issues with your feet, such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), arthritis, flat feet, sprains, or anything else that affects your feet or lower legs. You may also be referred to a podiatrist if another medical professional suspects an issue stems from your feet or your legs without you even realising it! An experienced podiatrist is well-versed in all things feet, ankles, and legs and aims to do all they can to get you moving as freely as possible, as quickly as possible.

Common Podiatry Conditions

The foot is a complex structure, and pain may occur in many different areas, including the toes, sole, forefoot, rearfoot and ankle.
Knee pain may develop for a number of reasons and in people of any age.
Skin and nail conditions that may affect the feet include ingrown toenails, plantar warts, corns and calluses, and more.
Having little legs and feet doesn’t exempt kids from pain! Identifying causes of pain as early as possible is incredibly important for their growth and development.
Issues with the feet and legs can have far-reaching effects, such as to the hips and lower back.
People with diabetes and certain other medical conditions may be more at risk of developing problems with their feet than others.

What To Expect From Podiatry

Podiatry-Assessment-

1. Assessment

Your podiatrist should assess the area you’re concerned about, whether it be on the sole of your foot, around a toenail, or in your ankles, knees, or hips. This may involve them looking at and touching the area and watching you walk to determine the possible cause of your problem.
Podiatry-Diagnosis-

2. Diagnosis

With this information, your podiatrist should come to a conclusion and offer a diagnosis of your condition. If necessary X-Rays, ultrasound and MRI may be ordered to clarify your diagnosis.
Podiatry-Treatment-

3. Treatment

After diagnosing your condition, your podiatrist will determine and recommend the best possible treatment plan for you.

Your General Podiatry Questions Answered

A podiatrist assesses your feet and lower legs to determine if there are any issues and, if so, how they may be able to help. At Foot and Leg Pain Centre, our focus is on restoring your physical freedom.

Podiatrists commonly treat conditions such as flat or highly arched feet, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, skin and nail conditions, and people with conditions such as arthritis and diabetes.

General foot care involves washing and drying your feet well, keeping your toenails neat, and going to a podiatrist if you notice any potential issues.
Many people choose to see a podiatrist if they experience pain or discomfort in their feet or ankles or notice something such as a plantar wart, bunion, or a bothersome corn or callus. Additionally, people with diabetes should regularly see a podiatrist due to their increased risk of developing foot problems.
